Water And Chelation Therapy

By: Ashraf Girgis N.D.

Water, water, water. Have you ever thought about what life would be without water?

The answer is simple: life would not exist. Water is truly the essence of life.  We know the importance of water for life, and we also know that water plays an undeniable role in detoxing the body, especially when we are facing toxins that can cause autoimmune or any other diseases. At the University of Sheffield in the UK, human nutrition scientists concluded that women who are hydrated well have a 79% lower occurrence of breast cancer. As water undoubtedly plays a crucial role in the body's function. Here are several reasons why water is so essential to our body and to our physical health.

1.  Water as a carrier

We know that our bodies are composed of 25% solid material and 75% water. This water is not proportionally distributed; for example, our brain is 73-80% water. In order for anything –hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, nutrients, chemicals, etc. – to move from point A to point B,water acts as the fluid which carries out this enormous and vital task. In other words, even if you eat right, take your vitamins as you are supposed to, and do everything right for your health, it won't matter unless you have the water to help carry nutrients, minerals, and essential vitamins to their intended destinations. In other words, water is like a door-to-door delivery system that carries everything from one cell to another.Without it, our body’s functioning is disturbed and can easily malfunction or stop altogether.

2.  Homeostasis

To keep our bodies in balance, water is constantly in motion within and outside our cells.Water plays an essential role in maintaining equilibrium. Water moving from inside the cell (intra-cellular level) to outside the cell (extra-cellular level) causes the particles and chemicals (solutes) to move out to the area of lesser pressure. For example, if you are dehydrated, the pressure difference will result in the movement of particles from one side to the other.  Usually the difference is kept between 10-15%. If a trend of cell dehydration continues,we might see changes of the chemical composition inside the cell, possibly affecting and even changing the DNA. In other words, we need to stay hydrated so that our body can stay in balance.

     3. As a metabolic response

Water is the medium of metabolism according to Dr. Batmanghlidj, author and pioneer in the field of waterand illnesses  ("You are not sick, you are thirsty"). A mere 1% decrease of cell hydration can a cause 10%decrease in metabolic efficiency. Cell function becomes impaired. When the brain registers the dehydration signal, it goes into the mode of water retention. It does the same at times of stress. During stress, water isdirected toward vital organs. Therefore, non-vital organs such as the intestinal system and others will end up in a stage of continuous dehydration. That is why Dr. Batmanghlidj (an Iranian-British doctor) believed that he duodenal ulcer is caused by dehydration. He treated 3000 duodenal ulcer patients simply by allowing them to drink a few glasses of water at once. Their pain subsided, and their illness was healed (book, Your Body Cries for Water). It is very important to realize that drinking lots of water at once can also kill. In a study published in New England Journal of Medicine, scientists discovered that one out of every six marathon runners developed hyponatremia (low sodium levels in blood) due to drinking too much of water at once. Although hyponatremia is rare, it can occur after severe dehydration when drinking suddenly. It can be fatal. Signs of severe hyponatremia are fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, and frequent urinations. So if you are very dehydrated, it is important to drink water slowly so your body can adjust.

4.   Water as a Detoxing Agent

Water keeps our bodies detoxed through sweat (.5 liter of water daily), urine (average of 1.4liters or 6 cups daily), as well as through breathing (about 237 ml or a cup of water daily). We lose more water if we have diarrhea, vomiting, or fever. Through our intestinal systems, we also lose water in the form of feces (.21 liter daily). So imagine that water’s important role as described above is in jeopardy. This is the case with the contaminated water in Flint, Michigan, where toxic water is an issue that has not yet been solved(Aril 2019).

Once toxins are released into the environment, they accumulate in the soil. These toxins then find themselves into our food as well as into our drinking water (Abida Begum et al., 2009). The heavy metals in our drinking water linked with poisoning our bodies are chromium, cadmium, lead, iron, copper, zinc, and more. These chemicals, even in very small doses, can be toxic to our bodies. For example, lead can cause ADHD. It is also considered an environmental neurotoxin that can impair brain development, especially in children(Canfield et al. 2003; Lanphear et al. 2005; Surkan et al. 2007). The known fatal effects of heavy metal toxicity in drinking water include damaged or reduced mental and central nervous function and lower energy level. It can also cause changes in blood composition effecting liver and kidneys (Sher Ali Khan et al., 2011).Other diseases caused by metal poisonings include Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s (degenerative disease of brain), multiple sclerosis (nervous system disease), and many other autoimmune disorders.

Water pollutants mainly consists of heavy metals , fertilizers, microorganisms, and thousands of toxic compounds. Heavy metals might be at trace levels or only slightly above normal limits, but they are still very toxic to the human body. So because of the important role water plays in our bodies, and the fact that 66-75% of our body is made of water, it is imperative to make sure our drinking  water is free of toxins.

Most cities, towns, and counties in the United States have government offices that can test water samples for free. In fact, they will send you a tube to send them a sample and respond with the result within a few weeks. If the results indicate the presence of any toxins, you can contact your physician to see what can be done. One of the alternative options for getting rid of toxic metals is chelation therapy. Chelation therapy is aproven method that has been in practice for the last 50 years or more. Chelation material (EDTA--Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) was developed by the Germans in WWII toombat the effects of poisonous gas. In 1947, Dr. Charles Geschickter of the Georgetown University Medical Center used EDTA on a cancer patient to save her from the toxic nickel that had accumulated in her body as a result of chemotherapy. His treatment was successful. However, it was not until 1948 that the US Navy started using EDTA to treat lead poisoning. EDTA was also used to remove calcium from pipes and containers.

At the time, Dr. Norman Clark of Providence Hospital (Detroit, Michigan) hypothesized that because calciumplaque is a very significant component of atherosclerosis, EDTA could be used as an effective treatment ofheart ailments. Many doctors started using it, and published findings from their own experiences. The word “chelation” is derived from the Greek word “to bind.” Chelation therapy is the process of takinga substance (EDTA) by mouth or by intravenous therapy injections, and then allowing chemicals in the substance to latch on to toxins and remove them. In 1983, the American Board of Chelation was formed to create parameters and education for the safe practice of EDTA chelation.

Since then, many have used chelation therapy to remove toxic, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, iron, and copper from the body. In the case of EDTA, a synthetic amino acid is delivered by injections through the vein or by mouth. EDTA treatment is an FDA approved process. It has also been used for other environmental toxins, such as lead in paint or water, and gasoline in coal burning. It helps with chemicals in everyday products: toxic elements such as cadmium (plastic stabilizer, craft glaze, batteries, printing, textiles dyes, fungicides, electronic parts, nuclear reactors, etc.) can be detrimental to our health and cause cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Chelation therapy has been used safely on more than a million patients across the United States over the past 50 years (Alternative Medicine P.147). Due to its binding to calcium and removing it to the atherosclerotic wall of the vessel, chelation has been used in cardiovascular patients as well. However, its use in cardiovascular problems has not yet been approved, despite its demonstrated effectiveness. According to several studies, other benefits of chelation therapy include:
1. Detoxification from not only metals, but also of poisonous snake/spider venom.
2. Improvement in memory, vision, and cerebral vascularization (due to improvement of blood flow by removing calcium deposits in atherosclerotic walls of blood vessels).
3. A slowing of the aging process. In diseases such as Macular Degeneration and diabetes, chelation been used to improve circulation. In Alzheimer’s, a slowing of the disease’s advancement has been noticed. In a study done on 2,870 patients with varying degrees of age-related degenerative diseases, 90% of the patients showed excellent improvement in their disease.

4.Reduction in cancer mortality and cancer prevention.
5. Improvement in irregular heart rhythms due to digital toxicity.
6.Fewer allergies and overall improvements in the immune system. These are just some of the documented improvements with usage of chelation therapy. It is important to have a complete physical, baseline blood tests, and cardiac functions studies on file before pursuing chelation therapy. It is also necessary to measure the level of minerals in the body by taking hair samples prior to participating in chelation therapy. An EKG and Doppler Echocardiogram for patients with heart diseases is very important as well. Doctors determine the dosage and amount of EDTA IV treatment necessary. Usually, it is determined by weight, sex, age, and condition of the patient. It can be used as often as once or twice a week for several weeks.

At least 500,000 patients in the United States have received 10,000,000 EDTA treatments following the recommendations of the American Collage of Advancement of Medicine (ACAM) without any loss of life. However, Chelation therapy is not recommended for children, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Apparently, there has been a death of one child as result (Web MD).
